Family Vacation: The Palace (A Review)

At some point, floating around the internet, I read an article stating that instead of buying your children 'things', you are better off investing your money on family holidays and rather focusing on building memories. Those are the things (supposedly) that build character, bring families together and generally make for an idyllic childhood.

And honestly, who doesn't like to go on holiday?

And so, newly pregnant with our second child, and having just turned 30 (I was mourning my 20s), we decided to head to Sun City for a weekend, or more specifically The Palace (as a family).

Our room was magnificent - there's just something about hotel room beds that make them that much more appealing (mind out the gutter!). The huge four poster bed meant that my tot could snuggle between us and turn full circle without kicking either of us - now, that's a novelty. Despite The Palace providing us with a camp cot, along with all the fluffy luxurious baby linen, our monster decided that the four poster bed was way better. Can't say I blame him.

Okay, let's talk about the food at The Palace (the little that I was able to keep down): DELICIOUS! Seriously, there's a reason that they're known for their food. The dinners, breakfasts and high-teas were all to die for. And once again, our tot was accommodated with high-chairs (although he never stayed in them for very long), extra tomatoes (don't ask!) and additional napkins (I forgot his bibs).

The palace swimming pool boasts an extra pool just for the children - which meant that we didn't always have to go the valley of the waves. So, naturally Augusto had a ball!

Walking down to the Valley of the Waves from the palace means navigating some serious stairs, which overlook the adult (read nude) pool. Which is a bit odd, because right now my tot doesn't care, but fast forward a few years and I'm sure my teenage boy will be craning his neck down those stairs to see some naked bodies.

The Valley of the Waves children's section (The mighty mountain) is filled with little water slides and a baby splash pool great for toddler's and little kids. And of course, we had tears every time we had to leave the valley of the waves.

Sun City boasts a children's club as well, where you can leave your kids for the day - I just felt that our tot was too small for this, and honestly he's not so big on strangers, so he rolled with us in whatever we chose to do.

One of the days that we were there it rained, leaving me searching for something to do with Augusto. I eventually settled on the arcade, although that lasted a total of 15 minutes before he got bored, and so we went back to the place and played hide and seek in the hotel room.

The Palace, and Sun City in general is a great getaway for a family trip - it's still close enough to home in case of an emergency, but still far enough away from the city that you can forget about work/home life for a bit.. Although, with a toddler I'm not sure I could have done more than a weekend - maybe when he's older we'll stay for longer?
